You may have noticed that the big Vegas casinos such as Harrah's, MGM Grand and Caesars Palace don't have online casinos. There are several reasons for this, the first of which is the current legal situation in the US. Online gambling is a bit of a gray area and as such most of the big US brands do not have the option of opening an online casino.

MGM Grand did in fact launch an online casino in mid 2002. Together with the Hard Rock casino they come online using Wagerworks (IGT) software. The only catch was that they did not accept US players, only players from the United Kingdom could play. Unfortunately it seems the online casinos did not attract enough interest as they closed down.

Lasseters Casino, a casino located in the Northern Territory of Australia had quite a popular online casino prior to 2001 when they stopped taking Australian players. Their online casino remained open until 2006. The land-based casino is still open.

Another relatively well known land-based casino, Crown, based in Melbourne Australia also tested the online casino waters with the launch of Crown Games. Once again they did not accept players from the US and again they closed down after just a few months online. It is rumored that in 2012 they will re-open with an EU and UK focused online casino.

In the same region, Christchurch Casino in New Zealand operated the popular Kiwi Casino for over a decade. They later sold the Kiwi Casino brand to an offshore company who have since closed the casino.

This brings us to the question. Are there any online casinos that are owned and operated by land-based gaming companies? The answer is yes - especially in the UK.

Online Casinos with Land-Based Games

In the last few years the traditional slot machine manufacturers have started releasing their games online and operating online casinos. The biggest of these groups is IGT (International Game Technology). Some of the casinos that use software from IGT include,

The Future

As more and more countries regulate online gambling we are sure to see more land-based casino operators opening online casinos. The major software providers are already making the move and we predict that in the near future that Las Vegas casinos like the Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas, Aria and The Palms will all offer online gaming. Until then there are a lot of great online casinos to play at today.
