Monty Python's Spamalot Slot Machine Review

Monty Pythons Spamalot is a 5 reel, 20 line progressive slot found at all Playtech online casinos. The game is based on the Spamalot musical comedy which is based on the hit 1976 film - Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The game has five different bonus features as well as two progressive jackpots that are won via a pick a box bonus stage.

You can play Spamalot in a variety of coin sizes that start at 0.01 and go up to 1.00 at most casinos. Maximum bet is 20 coins so you can get in on the action for as little as 0.20 a spin or as much as 20.00. It's worth noting at this point that the bigger you bet the bigger the chance you have at winning the progressive jackpots.

On to the reels and the Grail symbol is wild and substitutes for everything but the scattered Bonus symbols and the scattered Logos. Getting five of the Grail symbols on an active line awards the top line win of 5,000 coins. Second highest line win is also made up with the wilds with four aligned left to right awarding 1,500 coins.

The five character symbols make up the next five highest line wins which come in at 600 (Five King Arthur), 300 (Five Sir Lancelot, Sir Robin or Sir Galahad) and 400 coins (Five Lady of the Lake). The rest of the five of a kind line wins come in at between 200 and 120 coins.

On the first and last reels are Bonus Cloud symbols which activate all four Acts in the bonus stage features. Each time you get a Bonus symbol on reels 1 and 5 you win one of the four bonus games in the same order each time. The bonus games are as follows,

  • Storm the Castle (Preview)
You pick one from six spots and then watch the French throw a cow at you. If they miss you win a prize and get to pick a gain. If they hit you the bonus ends.

  • None Shall Pass (Preview | Preview 2)
The ridiculously brave knight blocks your path and you get four strikes to attack him. Each successful strike removes a limb and awards a prize which is multiplied by the current multiplier of up to X5. Each miss reduces the multiplier by X1. The bonus ends after four attacks and any prizes are paid.

  • The Knights Who Say Ni (Preview | Preview 2)
The knights demand shrubbery as a sacrifice and you get up to three chances to find the most valuable shrubs on the second screen stage. If you're not happy with your win you can try again but you cannot go back so you take a risk if you refuse a prize that the next one will be lower. In our experience the highest we say was X9.

  • The Killer Rabbit (Preview)
Six knights must cross a path but a killer rabbit is in the way. You pick one rock where you think the rabbit is hiding and if you are correct the remaining knights pass and award a bonus prize. Each unsuccessful pick results in a dead knight.

At this point, Spamalot is already a feature packed game but there is still more with free spins and the chance to win one of the progressives. To win the free games you need to get three or more of the scattered logos anywhere on the screen. This awards 10 free spins with random wilds and a chance to win the Holy Grail Bonus. As usual getting five scatters also awards a nice pay which in this case is 250X your bet or 5,000 coins.

During the free spins there is no multiplier but you do have a better chance of getting the five wild grail symbols as a bird can fly across the screen and add up to 5 extra wilds to the reels. This can turn a losing spin into a winning one so we really like this feature. The free games cannot be re-triggered but you can win the Holy Grail Progressive Bonus.

On the free spins a Holy Grail symbol is added to the middle reel. Collect five during the free games and you get a shot at the Holy Grail Bonus where you stand a chance of winning one of the two progressives. The bonus has six levels where you pick items to win prizes and move up a level. The bonus ends when a big foot appears or you win a progressive.

The various Holy Grail Bonus levels in order are Chickens (Preview), Rabbits (Preview), Hands (Preview), Knights (Preview), Cows (Preview) and Whatever That Is (Preview).

For the first five levels you are looking at winning instant prizes. If you get to the top you have a chance at winning either the Holy Grail Jackpot which starts at $500,000 or the Slightly Less Holy Grail which starts at $150. As we mentioned earlier the bigger you bet on the base game the bigger your chance of winning a progressive on the bonus.

In the end, Monty Python's Spamalot is a very entertaining slot machine that captures the humor or the musical and the movie very well. The fact that the base jackpot starts at $500,000 means that the game has the highest starting level of any Playtech progressive at the time of writing. Regardless if you're a fan of Monty Python, Spamalot is a top quality game with lots of bonus features and some impressive jackpots.
