Private Eye Slot Machine Review

Private Eye is a Microgaming video slot with two bonus features and a crime investigation theme. This genre is very popular on TV with shows such as CSI and Bones to name a few. It's not quite as popular as a slot machine theme although Private Eye shows how the theme can result in a great slot machine.

The game uses the 5 reel, 243 Ways format which means there are no lines and you just need to get symbols as left to right aligned scatters to win. You do not have to bet on the individual ways, instead you just need to play 25 coins to have all ways active. You can bet up to 10 credits per way which makes for a 250 credit max bet.

The Private Eye Badge is the wild symbol and offers the highest line of of the game coming in at 1,000 coins or 10,000 coins at max bet. The Badge substitutes for all symbols except three - the Detective Scatter, the Bonus Paperboy and the Bonus Clue symbols.

On the reels you have nine different way win symbols in addition to the wild Badge. Five of a kinds for these symbols come in at between 500 coins (Five Ladies) and 50 coins (Five Handcuffs). It's always good to see a video slot that does not have the A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols. All of the symbols on Private Eye related well to the theme.

The Detective symbol is a scatter and unlike the other way win symbols pays scattered anywhere on the reels as long as you get three or more. Five scatters pays a big 100X your bet or 25,000 coins at max bet. This is one of those situations where the scatters pay more than the win for five wilds. Oddly these scatters do not activate any bonus.

There are two different bonus symbols on the reels. The first is the Free Spins Paperboy symbols which only appear on the last three reels and the second is the Bonus Clue symbol which only appears on reels 1, 2 and 3.

Get three Paperboy symbols on the screen and you win a shot at the free spins. To make things a bit interesting you first go to a second screen stage where you have to pick three multipliers to reveal free spins, a multiplier and a bonus win. The best possible win is 20 free games with wins X4 and 1,000 coins as the extra win.

The second bonus is the Solve the Case Bonus which is triggered with three Bonus Clue symbols. Once won you move on to a second screen where you have a detectives desk and a range of items to choose from. You get to select items and find clues until the phone rings which ends the bonus stage.

If you uncover a fingerprint before the phone rings you win all prizes on the first stage and move on to the second phase of the bonus called the Mugshot Bonus. Here you get to pick one of five mugshots to reveal a cash prize. The maximum you can win from the two bonuses is a total of 12,000 coins or just higher than the five wilds win.

Microgaming have done a great job with Private Eye. It captures the theme well, has enough good pays to keep things interesting and the two bonuses really add to the theme.
