I have to admit when I first saw Sumo as a title for a new online slot I was excited. Back in 2001 Aristocrat launched a Sumo video slot and it was a great game with all wins paying scattered on the free spins. So I was hoping that this version would be the same. Unfortunately it is not but it is still a good game.
This version of Sumo is a 5 reel, 25 line game with a pick a box bonus instead of free spins. It has a maximum bet of 1 coin per line giving a total of 25 coins per spin. Coin sizes range from 1 ¢ to $5 so max bet ranges from 25¢ to $125.
Like the name suggests, Sumo has an Asian inspired theme with Sumo Wrestling being the main theme. The Sumo symbol is wild, substitutes for all pays except scatters and awards the games top pay. Line up five wild sumo symbols on any active line and you win 5,000 times your line bet.
The scatters make up the second highest pay with 5 scatters paying 100 times your total bet or 2,500 coins at max bet. Third highest line win is 1,000 coins which can be won by lining up four wilds or five of the girl symbols. In total there are 40 different winning combinations on the reels.
The scattered Trophy symbols are the key to winning the second screen bonus. Get three, four or five and you win the initial scatter bonus win as well as a shot at the bonus screen game. On the bonus screen you get to see a grid of nine squares (View Bonus Stage Screenshot).
The good news with the bonus stage is that you get to pick all nine squares to award prizes. All wins on the bonus are paid at multiples of your bet that triggered the bonus. This means that the higher you bet during regular play the higher the potential jackpots on the bonus.
While this version of Sumo is not the same as the Aristocrat version it still offers some good jackpots and a rewarding bonus stage.
