Retro Reels Slot Machine Review

Retro Reels is a 5 reel, 20 line slot machine found at online casinos that use Microgaming software. The game has a retro feel that resembles a spinning reel 5 reel slots as opposed to a video slot. There are still quite a few of this type of slot machines on casinos floors around the world.

Maximum bet on Retro Reels is 400 coins or 20 coins per pay line. Coin sizes range from $0.01 to $0.05 so you are looking at between $4 and $20 per spin. As usual the more you bet the bigger the potential wins.

There is no wild symbol on Retro Reels. The top paying symbol is the dollar sign which pays a big 10,000 coins for five of a kind. This pays 200,000 coins if you are playing maximum bet or between $2000 and $10,000 depending on the coin size you play with.

After the top jackpot there si a big drop to the next highest pay which is just 500 coins for five of the red or blue sevens. From here the rest of the five of a kind wins pay between 250 and 75 coins. Like many of the three reel classic slots there are some mixed combination pays such as any sevens and any bars.

The 5 Free Spins symbol is scattered and pays anywhere on the reels. Getting two, three, four or five scatters awards 10, 15, 20 and 25 free games respectively. During the free games all wins are doubled so the top jackpot pays a big 400,000 coins. The free games can be re-triggered and the fact that you only need two scatters means re-triggers should be quite frequent.

In addition to the free spins, Retro Reels has a re-spin feature. This is a paid feature where at the end of any spin you can choose to re-spin any of the reels an unlimited amount of times. If this sounds too good to be true then it is worth noting that the amount you pay to re-spin a reel is directly related to the amount you can win from the re-spin.

This can be very expensive depending on the symbol you are missing. For example one symbol off the top jackpot and the re-spin will cost you between 10% and 20% of the jackpot. This means if you do not hit the jackpot in a few spins you will have lost more than the top pay trying to get the top pay.

In our opinion the re-spin feature can be good in some situations such as when you have one scatter since you can try again to get the free games where the top award is 400,000 coins and the cost of the re-spin is much lower than the potential reward from the free games.

In the end, Retro Reels is the first time Microgaming have released a spinning reel style five reel slot. We like the fact that the free games are triggered by just two symbols and the 400,000 coin jackpot is a nice top prize. The re-spin bonus adds a new twist if you are looking for something different.
