IGT Launches REELdepth 3D Slot Machines

Published : 5th of September, 2008

The difference between online slots and those found at land based casinos has disappeared over recent years. With the introduction of the ReelDepth series IGT has created a new format that will most likely never be re-created online - 3D video slots.

The new format uses two lcd screens placed on top of each other. Known as Multi-Layer Displays (MLD) the new technology gives a true 3D effect without the need for any 3D glasses. The new games are being rolled out across casinos in the USA starting this week with the Grand Casino Hinckley and Grand Casino Mille Lacs both of which are in Minnesota.

The MLD(R) technology, pioneered by PureDepth(TM) Inc., was highlighted at the Society for Information Display's Display Week 2008 as one of the most innovative technical developments. PureDepth(TM) technology is backed by 51 approved patents and more than 80 pending patents.

"This is a technology investment that will stand the test of time. REELdepth(TM) embodies much of what is best about IGT -- forward-looking technology and engineering; design and application of game content with artistic flair; and the full gamut of great slot games."said Robert Allen, Corporate Vice President of Slot Operations for Grand Casinos Minnesota.

All of the new machines are Winners Choice machines which means that you will find more than one game available in each machine and you can also find a mix of both video slots, video poker and spinning reel style slots.

The biggest change to casino floors looks to be the possibility that the amount of traditional spinning reel style slot might well start shrinking. The new format not only replicates the game graphics but also include vibrations and sounds to mimic the feeling of a traditional classic slot.

This is one technology that will not be appearing online any time soon as it is very unlikely that home PC monitors will feature the MLD option in the near future. The only way that this style of game can be achieved online is with 3D glasses which in itself has some clear limitations.
