The Sopranos Slot Machine Review

The Sopranos was one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows winning 21 Emmys and 5 Golden Globes. The show ran from 1999 to 2007 and was the most successful cable television show of all time. Some have even gone as far as to say it was the best television program of all time. Whatever your opinion the theme is perfect for a slot machine.

Tony and his family are making their first appearance on an online slot. It's worth noting that this game is not the same as the Sopranos game released by Aristocrat that you may have played at your local casino. The good news is that we think this version is better than the Aristocrat version.

The game uses the 5 reel, 25 line format with a 25 coin max bet. The available coin sizes vary from casino to casino with the majority of casinos starting at 0.20. This makes for a minimum max bet of 5.00. We hope that the casinos decide to drop the minimum coin size to 0.01 but we can see why they have gone with the 0.20 minimum.

Playtech have done a great job with the theme. They have included numerous videos from the series throughout the game both on the reels and in the bonuses. They have also kept all bonuses on theme with a visit to Bada Bing, a Raid Bonus and a Stolen Goods bonus all adding different ways to win.

On the reels you have six of the main characters from the series with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli), Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri (Tony Sirico), Bobby 'Bacala' Baccalieri (Steve Schirripa), Artie Bucco (John Ventimiglia) and Johnny 'Sack' Sacramoni (Vincent Curatola).

Interestingly the developers left out all of the main female characters so there is no sight of Carmela, Meadow or Dr Melfi. This makes sense in a way as the game clearly focuses on the "business" aspect of the series rather than the family aspect.

The Tony symbols are wild and substitute for all symbols but the scattered Bada Bing, Shipping Container and Sopranos Logos. Getting five wild Tony symbols on any active line awards the top line win of 3,000 coins.

The other five characters make up the next highest line wins coming in at between 1000 coins (Five Paulie symbols) and 150 coins (Five Artie symbols). The rest of the line wins are made up with the A through J symbols with five of a kind pays ranging from 50 to 100.

The Sopranos has lots of different features. The first is the free spins feature which is triggered by getting three or more of the scattered Sopranos logos anywhere on the screen. Once triggered you move to the Crime Family Bonus where you have four unlockable free spin features to choose from (View Screen).

This feature works in a very similar way to the bonus on Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance. Each time you hit the feature you light up one section below a feature. Once all lights are lit you can then play that bonus. You start with the Soldier Bonus and can then unlock the others as you play. Once a bonus is unlocked it remains unlocked forever.

The different free spin bonuses are as follows,

  • Soldier Free Spins (Preview)
Unlock : On the first feature trigger
Details : You win 25 free spins with Christopher being an extra wild that substitutes for everything but the scatters and the Tony symbols. A Chris symbol on the middle position of reel three adds 5 extra free games.

  • Capo Free Spins (Preview)
Unlock : Available after the third bonus trigger
Details : Win 20 free spins with an initial multiplier of between X2 and X5. Every time a Paulie symbols appears anywhere the multiplier on the next spin is increased (up to X5). The Capo spins cannot be re-triggered.

  • Boss Free Spins (Preview)
Unlock : Available after the sixth feature win
Details : Win 10 free spins where 2 to 5 Tony Extra Wilds are added to the screen on every spin. A Tony symbol on the middle position of reel 3 adds an extra 5 free spins.

  • Family Free Spins (Preview)
Unlock : Available after the ninth bonus win
Details : Win 10 free games with only the family members (plus Artie and the scatter) are on the reels. During the free spins the Tony wild symbol acts as a X2 win multiplier. The Family Spins cannot be re-triggered.

That's the free spins covered but there are still several other ways to win on The Sopranos. Next up is the Raid Bonus which is randomly triggered at the end of any spin. This bonus takes you to a second screen stage where you have four enveloped to hide before the Feds arrive (View Screenshot).

You can select any of the four hiding spots for the money with the knowledge that the Feds will find two of the spots. This gives you a bit of a strategy choice as you can hide all four in one place for the "All or Nothing" bet or you can pace on envelope in each spot with a guarantee to win half of the money.

The next feature is the Bada Bing Bonus which is triggered by getting the three Bada Bing scatters on the middle three reels. You then move to another second screen stage where you have five characters waiting to see Tony (Preview). Pick one, watch a scene from the show and get your reward. You can get multiple shots at the bonus with the best pay we had for one character being 10X bet.

The final bonus on The Sopranos is the Stolen Goods Bonus which is triggered by getting a scattered Shipping Container anywhere on the first and last reels. You then move to a pick a box stage where you have values listed on the right (Preview).

Select a shipping container to reveal your prize. If you're not happy with the win you can try twice more for a better win. We like the fact that you can see the remaining prizes which makes the choice a bit easier. On several bonuses we got the top award which paid 40X our total bet or $200 at the $5 bet level.

This may have been one of our longest game reviews but as you can see The Sopranos online slot is so feature packed that it took a while to cover everything. In our opinion Playtech have done a fabulous job of capturing the theme while creating an impressive slot in it's own right. Whether or not you're a fan of the series, The Sopranos is one online slot that really must be played if you're a fan of slot machines.
